I
live and work in Brooklyn New York. I am happiest when
I am making pictures in response to what I have experienced
and seen in the world. I could not make a picture from
some one else’s idea or photo- I haven’t
been there. I need the experience and to respond with
my feeling.
Art
reflects life for me. People are amazing. I am a storyteller-that’s
how I engage in the world. I respond to life with art.
Often my figures are prototypes inspired by individuals.
The faces are not necessarily developed, the character
is in the gesture. I like working flat, but the challenge
is to show some depth. I like an open-ended story-for
instance, the “traveler”, inspired by my
mother coming to visit, can go anywhere. The piece is
subject to interpretation: what does the image evoke
for the viewer?
I
studied Chinese calligraphy with Wang
Chi-Yuan. After
his death I began creating contemporary art, working
abstractly and figuratively in oil, acrylic, watercolor,
charcoal and collage. More recently I have studied figure
drawing at Spring
Studio with Minerva Durham.
On
a personal note I am passionate about addressing global
warming. My favorite organizations are the National
Resource Defense Council and the Union
for Concerned Scientists. A wonderful project that
highlights the potential consequences of climate change
on New York
City is highwaterline.
My
work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows
in New York City as well as in juried shows throughout
the United States. I have been awarded residencies at
both the Byrdcliffe Art Colony and the Blue Mountain
Center. I am a member of the National Association for
Women (NAWA), Women in the Arts, and the NY Artists’ Circle. |
